Last year the SFL started a women’s competition with 5 sides competing. At the time the Hobart Football Club was not in the position to be able to take part in this competition but would look to build for the next year.
In late 2017, it was decided we would put the feelers out to see if we could get a side together. One of our board members, Callam Upchurch took it upon himself to see what interest there was and within the first day or two had five interest players; this grew at quite a rapid rate and before long about 20 women had shown some interest. So we organised a meet and greet night for those that had shown their interest and then a week later under our fitness coach Callan Newman they had their first training session. Now most of this group of girls had never played football before so the first few sessions were interesting to say the least. But no one could fault them for their enthusiasm.
Just before Christmas last year it was officially confirmed we would have a team in the SFLW for the 2018 side, so now we needed a coach! We were given a name of a former player who played for Hobart in our first women’s side and who was looking to get back into the game in a capacity other than playing.
We introduced Claire Sutton to the club and the girls and from then on she has taken them through their paces and the improvement has been astronomical. We have also managed to recruit more players to the team and are rapidly approaching 30 girls. One of the final pieces of the jigsaw fell into place this week with a team manager coming on board and the team is just about complete.
We are now looking forward to the women’s side running out onto the ground for their first clash of the season and would love plenty of support to get behind Claire and the girls as they represent the HFC.
It takes a lot to get a team on the ground and a lot to keep it there so if there are any keen volunteers out there that want to help out the women’s side or in general the Hobart Football Club in any fashion then please see anyone of our board members and they will be only too happy to assist.
